How do we build and empower our future, both locally and globally?

RISE: Empower, Change and Action! seeks to bring artists into dialogue and to bring forth what is important to self, community, our nation and the world at large through art that reflects and addresses complex socio-cultural issues and focuses on a vision for a more positive, empowering future, particularly for self-identified women and girls as well as their families. It is underpinned by the feminist principle that believes in political, economic and social equality for all.

Manifestations of empowerment can include gender equality; economic independence, education, access to health care, reproductive rights, human rights, freedom of expression, changing gender roles, and breaking gender and race stereotypes. Art submissions can range from literal to poetic, abstract to representational, and include social and political commentary. The show looks to include the more abstract ideals and universal themes of peace, exploration of belief systems, universal responsibility, and the search for beauty, and transcendence. Artists may submit works that are a source of healing, hope and compassion or instruments of growth, self-discovery, and social or political transformation. We welcome art that reflects personal as well as observed stories, whether myth, fact or fiction.

RISE aims to emphasize the commonalities of our human experience.

Art can be a powerful, productive force and instrumental in sparking change or critical thinking. In 2016, the space became Weinberg/Newton Gallery, having taken on a new mission focused on social justice issues. The change reflected and acknowledged the influence of attorney and philanthropist Jerry Newton on the gallery’s work, particularly in building relationships with partner non-profit organizations. Newton actively has been involved with organizations including the ACLU of Illinois, Human Rights Watch, and Personal PAC for more than four decades. Together, David Weinberg and Jerry Newton have guided the Weinberg/Newton Family Foundation since 2009. David’s commitment to educational reform and passion for social justice is at the core of the gallery's mission. Weinberg/Newton Gallery aims to create space for dialogue about the many social justice issues that concern our local Chicago community and beyond. In collaboration with artists and non-profit organizations, we work to cultivate a culture of consciousness and inspire change by way of exhibitions, panel discussions, film screenings, artist talks, and more.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt;">The exhibition Beyond Borders: Stories of im/Migration by the curatorial team Gutfreund Cornett Art and their group of international artists, sheds light on the personal and observed narratives surrounding the struggles of flight, immigration, assimilation, deportation, and the perception of being “other" in American society. The works acknowledge the dignity, dreams and sacrifices of these people and reflect on where we are going, individually and as community with shared desires for hope and home.
Through this “border wall”, visitors gain access to powerful, multi-media works: horrific and impactful, hopeful and reverential, abstract and emphatic, poetic and conceptual, with a call for reflection and action. The multi-media works powerfully speak to current, hot button and polarizing topics ripped from the news headlines.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt;">Boy in Suitcase, a video by Julio Cesar Morales, shows the alarming lengths to which people go to bring in their children to safety. The video The Jailer, Part 2, by Erin McKeown, Stephen Brackett and Shawn King, is a call to action to defeat hatred. Diane Kahlo has created a reverential altar to those who lost their lives in transit through the desert. The tender voices of youth as they assimilate are captured by Judy Gelles in a series of fourth graders’ portraits. Carlos Cartagena’s diptych speaks to overcoming fear of the unknown, because the alternative is worse. In large banner portraits, Gala Narezo, Shamina de Gonzaga and Chantal Fischzang challenge preconceptions of immigrants propagated by media and politicians. Delicate ceramic sculptures by Sana Krouse and a butterfly installation by Priscilla Otani speak beautifully and conceptually to im/Migration issues, while Daniela Ortiz’s video brutally sheds light on procedures used during forced deportation. These detail just a few of 24 artists in the exhibition that candidly, poetically and conceptually speak to these issues, highlighting universal, shared human experiences.
Art can produce a visceral response and can provoke, inspire, or disturb, and opens one’s eyes to worlds other than your own. Art can transcend language barriers, strengthen understanding, stimulate greater compassion between displaced people and the communities that receive them, move us to action and advocacy and create visions for a new, more inclusive society.

There is still plenty of time to go see the works that garnered the accolades:
Boundaries Exhibition statement of purpose:
The universe is defined by boundaries. The shore is the boundary between water, land and air. Your skin is the boundary between you and the rest of the world. Personal boundaries when abrogated, cause strife, dissension, and sometimes oppression. The boundaries between nations define friendships and hostilities. Boundaries determine the edge of play in many athletic competitions.

And where is the boundary of the universe? What is it? What does it mean to be outside of time and space? Is there really such a thing?
April's WCA Peninsula meeting took place on Tuesday the 21st,
and included an exceptionally helpful and informative presentation by Coastal Arts League member Mike Wong, who also co-owns Spring Mountain Gallery in Half
Moon Bay. Mike is a professional photographer with decades of experience
photographing everything from weddings to artwork. In his presentation he
demonstrated how to adjust camera settings to get the best possible photographs
when photographing artwork for the purpose of submission to shows, placement on
websites and any other digital media use.

In addition to specific camera settings, Mike emphasized the
importance of other components of set-up. These included the use of a tripod
and easel, the use of the self-timer feature, taping down the edges of paper
against a white background, and many other tips. Lighting, aperture and speed
settings were all discussed and WCA members came away with a treasure trove of
information and some great new ideas on how to improve the photographic
presentation of their artwork for competitions and websites.

Pat Keefe gave a dynamic artist presentation at the WCA Peninsula March meeting. She began her artistic endeavors in painting and bronze casting. Initially, Pat attended college to study nursing but later advanced to art therapy.

A highlight of Pat’s presentation was her story about a door and it’s frame that she towed around in her Jeep Wagoner to make photographs at many varied locations around the Bay. They included the DeYoung Museum and the Pacific Coast beaches. The door project became an integral part of her college art studies and a sculptural exhibit. This portfolio was an inspiration to those in attendance.

One of Pat’s other art projects were life-size paper dolls that she constructed from objects that tell her story. Luckily for our members, besides having wonderful pictures of the full size dolls, she had a set of the original small size paper dolls to pass around for each person to handle and to admire the feminine perspective. (See inset picture.)

More information from the LymeLight Foundation page:

Dart for Art is not an auction and not your typical cocktail party. Here’s how it works; as guests arrive each couple or single will be assigned numbers which will be used for the “Dart”. Guests will stroll through the gallery enjoying cocktails and meeting the artists, and previewing the various works of art. After a brief introduction the fun will begin. The numbers will be randomly pulled. As your number is called you are invited to Dart for your favorite piece of art. Dart for Art is a wonderful opportunity to obtain original art and have a good time doing it, all while supporting LymeLight Foundation.
