COLOR Exhibit opens April 5th in Half Moon Bay

COLOR ENERGY:  WHAT COLOR IS YOUR ENERGY?

“The purest and most thoughtful minds are those which love color the most,” wrote English art critic John Ruskin.  Love of color is evident in this show of artwork by a group of 20 Bay Area artists.

The exhibit, "Color," by members of Women’s Caucus for Art, Peninsula Chapter, will be on view from April 5 to May 6 at the Coastal Arts League Gallery & Museum, 300 Main Street in Half Moon Bay.  A reception with the artists will be held on Saturday, April 13, 5 to 7 pm. 

Painter, Alysanne McGaffey, shows a love of color in her luminous piece, “Forest Fire Red.” It is based on childhood memories of a cabin the forest.  “…the cabin in the woods was built of cedar and we used kerosene lanterns for lighting.”

If you ask Francine Survilo why she used the colors red and green in her painting of a ship of sheep at stranded at sea, she would probably tell you that she was guided by a feeling rather than a thought. 

Bonnie J. Smith's work "Blue Flow," will also be shown at her solo invitational exhibit "What I See and Know at The Loft Gallery, San Pedro, California in the month of March along with thirty-four of her colorful abstract artworks.

Leigh Toldi says of her pen and ink drawing, “Even an inkling of color energizes a black and white world.”  Rebecca Lambing’s painting “Transcending Aqua,” is a study in pure color.

 

“Color” is curated by Bonnie J. Smith and Marian Yap, president of Women's Caucus for Art, Peninsula Chapter.   The artworks shown will range from painting and sculpture to fiber art and photography.

Marian Yap Wins Spirit of Winter Art Competition

Marian Yap has won the Spirit of Winter International Art Competition sponsored by Art Quench Gallery.  Her mixed media painting, SHIMO - Frost, was the winning piece.  Juror Monica Hicks says"...I am in awe of how flat, and yet meaningful, the creases and layering of this material is. I find the monochrome layers of paper, consciously divided into planes and speaking certainly of the spirit of winter, to be an effective use of material and a well done exercise in restraint."
Marian says, "The painting of SHIMO -Frost began as a representation of winter.  As I worked on it I was able to convey a feeling of the cold and how the heavy frost or snow of winter envelopes the landscape to where only some remnants of life are visible.  I wanted the minimalism of the painting to prevail and I hope that I have succeeded in doing so."

New Exhibit for Bonnie Smith in Los Angeles Area

"What I See and Know," a solo exhibit by Bonnie J. Smith will be on display at The Loft Gallery, San Pedro, California  from March 7 - 31.

Opening exhibit will be on the First Thursday from 6-9 PM.  Bonnie has made a name for herself in the world of abstract and fiber arts. Bruce Hoffman, formerly Director of the Snyderman Works Gallery located in Philadelphia describes Smith's work as "simple, powerful, successful: design and craftsmanship working together." Bonnie is now a 2013 finalist for the NICHE Award, this award celebrates innovative artists in fine craft.

"What I See and Know" will highlight Bonnie's abstract artworks which make use of dynamic colors expressing her views of the world. Bonnie says she is "in love with texture and creating fiber art that flows" letting the viewers eye appreciate her use of color and design, all aspects that are all sure to be incorporated in this month's exhibit.
