A New Year - A New Beginning

“The human spirit is a natural gardener, producing bouquets in the soul constantly,” says Leigh Toldi, one of the artists whose painting “Unfolding Bouquet” will be in the art show at City Hall in Daly City to celebrate the induction and inaugural term of David J. Canepa as Mayor of Daly City.

The exhibit, “New Beginnings,” runs from January 16 through March 31 an
features twenty-two members of the Peninsula Chapter of Women’s Caucus for Art - painters, photographers, textile artists, printmakers, sculptors and mixed media artists.  A reception for the public will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. January 16.  The reception will be catered by Elephant Bar.

Alysanne McGaffey describes her recent watercolor poetically, “Waves sweep in roiling, tumbling, scrubbing the beach clear to begin life anew with each passing tide, creating my ‘Blue Beach.’”

Fiber artist, Bonnie J. Smith’s work titled, “The Team,” is based on a long, life changing project that involved team work.  She feels that it relates to the project of becoming mayor and needing a team to make it work.

Lorraine Capperell maintains a regimen that includes tai chi, meditation and producing a new watercolor painting each day.  Her piece for this show is titled, “ Awakening.”

This exhibit is co-curated by Marian Yap and Bonnie J. Smith.

WCA Peninsula Chapter Christmas Party December 17, 2013

We will gather together to celebrate the Holiday Season on Tuesday, December 17, 2013, at the Coastal Arts League, 300 Main Street, Half Moon Bay.  Please note that we will start at 7:00 PM.  Please bring a finger food item - nothing spillable, please - can be sweet or savory.
Last year the art exchange at our Christmas Party was a big success so we will do it again this year.
Members will be creating 4-5 pieces of original art in the size range 4 x 3 up to 6 x6 or 5 x7 inches and no more depth than a quarter of a inch. So anywhere, in between those sizes - create to your heart’s content.

Please wrap your art works individually in holiday wrapping paper and be sure to stabilize the art so it does not bend. The reason behind the wrapping is, yes, it is a surprise and you will know immediately pulling your art works from the paper bag if by accident, you retrieve your own artwork and it will still be a surprise to others.

Remember if you bring four pieces of artwork you will leave with four and bringing five means you will be able to leave with five.

Be sure and create each piece of artwork different as someone just might pull from the bag all of your art so we want them to have a variety.

"Swimming Upstream" Exhibit by Bonnie J. Smith

Bonnie J. Smith discovered the healing benefit - mind, body and spirit of creating fiber art and swimming after a work related injury left her confined to a wheel chair more than ten years ago. Creating the fiber art series "Swimming Upstream" not only healed her but tossed her into championing the rights of individuals disabled on the job.

The exhibit runs October 7 - 24 at the Polk State College Arts Center, Lake Wales, Florida. Artist reception and talk is October 10, 2014, 5 - 7:00 PM. Gallery hours are Monday thru Friday 10 - 4 PM.

Thus We Shall Walk

Thus we shall walk on the ruins of a vast sky,
The distant landscape will come into fullness
Like a destiny in the vivid light.

The long-sought most beautiful country
Will lie out before us --land of the salamanders.

Death is in it.
This is the secret lamp burning under our gestures,
Thus we walk lighted.

Please join us for our first family exhibition:

All in One is a collaborative art exhibition between three members of a family.    In their first family show, this unit of artists—mother, son, and father utilize different media and expressions, which is evocative in their artwork.

Cristina Velazquez is a mix media seeker, who employs the use of your recyclables to transform what has been discarded into pieces of fine art.  Although considered trash, the outcome will not be such.  Until we can eat our own trash, we will continue to have a garbage problem; Velazquez shares about her site-specific installation, Eat My Trash.  Recently has exhibited at the Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica, with an upcoming show at Pam Foss Fine Art Gallery in Maryland in November.

Pedro A. Alvarez-Velazquez, at his early 15 years of age has accumulated a vast portfolio of images captured through his different lenses.  A photographer with an expansive view on high art, shares part of his collection in this art exhibition.  As a young photographer he has render different colors and textures, that where shot in passing moments on hikes, at site seeing outings, and on everyday life with camera on hand.  Pedro has an acute eye for details and expands his repertoire of images by engaging in the most minute to the grand and showy of objects.  Recent exhibition with awards of merit at the Redwood City Annual Spring Art Show, where he won first place, and second place in the Middle School Division—Fine Arts with an award of  $25.00 check from the San Mateo Credit Union.

Annie Liebovitz Exhibit at San Jose Museum of Art

Thanks, Bonnie, for organizing the visit to see the Annie Liebovitz exhibit, "Pilgrimage", at the San Jose Museum of Art.  Chapter members Tanya, Bonnie, Annamaria and Marian, along with Annamaria's guest, Susan Switzer, met at the museum on Thursday.  The "Pilgimage" exhibit provided a lively conversation during our lunch - each one of us provided a unique viewpoint, adding to our museum experience.  It is definitely worth seeing - Annie Liebovitz is an iconic photographer who has experienced several life changing events in the past few years which probably was responsible for this new photographic viewpoint.

Here are some photos taken in the museum lobby - recognize the Dale Chihuly glass sculptures?
