40 Watts: Illuminating Herstory opens at the Pacific Art League – Norton Gallery with an Artist Reception on Friday, April 6, from 5:30- 8:30 pm.  Exhibition dates are April 6-27, 2012.

40 Watts: Illuminating Herstory 

is a collaborative exhibition between the Northern California, Peninsula and South Bay Area chapters Women’s Caucus for Art to celebrate the WCA 40^th Anniversary.

Esteemed member, Eleanor Dickinson begins her essay about WCA’s history by writing, “The Women’s Caucus for Art was born in anger and nurtured by challenge and innovation….”

Drawing from the foundations of our past forty years, with the fragile, dim beginnings strengthened by the non-apologetic voices of women artists that sought to create change, the exhibition investigates the diverse voices of women artists and the depth and breadth of work being created.  Multiple generations of women’s art are represented and within the selection are myriad formations of feminist thought and aesthetics. The works are also a testament to the drive that propelled them and their work forward - their experiences and their history.

Bonnie J. Smith's Happenings

Bonnie Smith's artwork "Color x 3" is currently being exhibited at the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles along with 46 other works from Quilt National 2011. Bonnie gave a talk on the volunteer/members tour about creating the work and exhibiting in Quilt National on Tuesday February 14, 2011.

Bonnie's work "Patricia L" is currently being exhibited at Idaho State University in the Transition Gallery at the Anderson Gender Resource Center thru March 17, 2012.  The title of the exhibit is "Mama Said" in celebration of Women's History Month.

 A recently finished work titled "What to say about the 50's" is part of a fabric challenge using a piece of fabric from the 50's in anyway she wanted to.  Her finished work took a much different avenue than others in the thirty member challenge.

      Happy New year to you all! I  hope that 2012 will be an especially good year for all of us. I am writing this short note to introduce you to my book which I am happy to announce is finally live! It has been a two plus year project, so you can imagine that I am very happy about its completion. This past year has been challenging for many of us, especially artists and musicians, yet life just keeps marching on and there are always adjustments to make along the way. Never knowing just how long any of us have to live on the Planet, it struck me that rather than waiting for a funeral to leave behind a few special words to the people who are important to me, I  thought I would rather share them now while I am still here.
  In 2009 I had a beautiful life-changing experience. It was very intense and powerful, and had such a calming and up-lifting effect on me I was driven from with-in to document it so I could share the experience (to the best of my ability) through words and art for my family and friends. The book is illustrated with 8 of my paintings (which are a part of the story), and at the end is my Ethical Will and a few expressions written by others who's words touch my heart deeply. It is my hope that those who read it will benefit from the messages contained within it, creating more peace, joy and harmony in their lives. It may also bring to light another interpretation on how to view the world, our connection to it, to each other, and all life. You can find it on the web by typing in The Great Spirit Says. Marian Yap's Current Artwork

This gift that we artists have is a saving grace.  We can lose ourselves in our creation and execution of our paintings, or whatever else we do to express ourselves.  I’m ready now to show some of the work I have recently completed.  These paintings are on 24” x 24” canvas and are inspired by the haiku poems I have been writing, reading and listening to.
