Daly City Mayor David J. Canepa attended the opening reception of the WATER exhibit at the Coastal Arts League Gallery in Half Moon Bay.  He had this Certificate of Recognition made for us and the chapter is very proud of this gesture.

The certificate reads:  It is a great pleasure to present this certificate to Women's Caucus for Art - Peninsula Chapter in recognition of your exhibit "Water" from September 12 - October 12, 2014.  You are commended for providing exhibition opportunities for women artists, sharing resources and educational networking.  Congratulations and best wishes for a successful event.

Cosette Dudley is a printmaker and lithographer.  Her work in this exhibition was inspired by her childhood friend Betty, a young girl of Japanese descent who was forced into an internment camp during WW2.  That brutal action shattered Betty and Cosette’s suburban neighborhood, delivering the cruelty of war right to their doors.  Betty was seemingly erased from the community, her innocence and childhood cut short.  With this exhibit, Dudley creates a link between the historical and the personal, furthering the conversation of erasure by burnishing portions of the images directly off the copper plate.
Cosette Dudley began her printmaking career during the turbulent 1960s.  Her work was highly influenced by her own experiences as a child during WW2,as well as the impact of the Vietnam war on her later life.  Throughout her career she has continued to explore themes of social justice, civil liberties, war and peace, and the environment.

Bonnie J. Smith Publishes New Book

Bonnie J. Smith's new eighty page book, "Swimming Upstream a Memoir with Portfolio Selections" is available on her web site www.bonniejofiberarts.com or may be purchased directly from Bonnie.  The Memoir tells the story of her work related accident and finally able to get back into life through swimming everyday. Swimming becomes the metaphor letting the reader know they are not alone in life's struggles.  The Portfolio selections are divided into different phases of Bonnie's art with artist statements and commentary.

"Forming Our Lives"

In the exhibit ‘Forming Our Lives’, three women recount personal stories that have affected and continue to shape their lives. Bonnie J. Smith found herself literally swimming upstream in her life after a work related injury forced her to use a wheel chair. Carol Larson was surgically shortened six inches as a teenager to make her a better fit for society. Cristina Velazquez’s work questions the world that says, “Women must be and do certain things.” The artwork they have created continually asks the question, “Why do certain situations happen in our lives and how do we overcome them” and gives insight into how three women have answered those hard questions.

Honorable Mention Award for Marian Yap's Painting STRATA

Marian Yap's painting, STRATA, took home an Honorable Mention award at the Wet Paint juried exhibit at the Pacific Art League in Palo Alto.  The exhibit is over now and the painting, acrylic/mixed media on 40" x 30" gallery wrapped canvas, is available for sale.
Two other of Marian's paintings were also juried into the Wet Paint exhibit - Gemini's Twin, and Stillness, both acrylic on 24" x 20" canvas.

About the Exhibit

An avid hiker both on Bay Area trails and in the Sierra Nevada backcountry, Yvonne has witnessed and recorded many vistas of infinite beauty, interpreting them using transparent watercolor. A native of the prairies of Saskatchewan, Canada she is in awe of the stature and grandness of mountains and mountain meadows that host the wild flowers of California. She paints local flowers and gardens with the same sense of adventure.
