Peninsula Women’s Caucus for Art Exhibition – Identity

Identity is our self-portrait. What surroundings, what colors, what icons, what culture defines who we are? Peninsula Women’s Caucus for Art artists are taking this opportunity to explore aspects of their Identities by using a diversity of styles. Pat Keefe chose to create her personal Kachina representing art, imagination and creativity in her collage. Marian Yap introduces her self-portrait painting with a Haiku. Lorraine Capparell’s images hum with expectancy, meaning and symbolism. Her watercolors represent what the English novelist E.M. Forester once called the “significant moment”. Works by Kris Idarius, Rebecca Lambing, Tanya Lin, Alysanne McGaffey, Yvonne Newhouse, and Bonnie J.Smith are also included.

This exhibition will be on view:

MARIAN YAP Receives Special International Recognition

Male Figure

Artist Marian Yap of Pacifica, California has received two Special Recognition Awards in the "2015 Exposition of Awarded Artwork WWW International" hosted by Upstream People Gallery of Omaha Nebraska. This international exhibition received approximately 225 art entries from around the world and 24 artists were selected by the juror Lawrence Bradshaw, Professor Emeritus of Art at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, U.S.A.

Professor Bradshaw writes about this specially recognized work:

Marian Yap of Pacifica, CA has achieved a fresh abstract level of expression. Her "Float", "Going to the Gypsy" and "Strata" all show a kind of softness and sense of orchestration fine tuned. And her "Male Figure" and "Stillness" with figurative qualities are quite strong in the manner of her sensitive painting technique.

Following is an artist's statement about this specially recognized artwork:

"My monotype, MALE FIGURE, was created and printed at IL BISONTE STUDIO in Florence, Italy, using non toxic inks.  The figurative work of California artist, Manuel Neri, was inspiration for this piece and I am pleased with the recognition that MALE FIGURE has received.
STILLNESS is a painting that evolved through several stages on the canvas before the final image emerged.  I hope that it conveys some mystery and fascination to the viewer."

YVONNE NEWHOUSE - "Risky Business" at Aspen Surgical Center, Walnut Creek, CA

Bison at the Thermals
Yvonne Newhouse reports:

"I have been working on some new and adventurous painting styles in the last few months and somebody out there likes it. I was pleased to be awarded 1st place in the California Watercolor Society’s “Risky Business” juried show for Bison at the Thermals. The call for art was for artists to try something out of their comfort zone. My painting involved pouring paint, a lot of spraying, wet into wet and masking, inspired by a recent trip to Jackson Hole Wy."

Yvonne's work and those of other members of the California Watercolor Association can be seen at the gallery located in the John Muir Medical Complex. The show was juried by Valerie Patricia Cohen and Linda Sutton.

Boundaries Exhibition statement of purpose:
The universe is defined by boundaries. The shore is the boundary between water, land and air. Your skin is the boundary between you and the rest of the world. Personal boundaries when abrogated, cause strife, dissension, and sometimes oppression. The boundaries between nations define friendships and hostilities. Boundaries determine the edge of play in many athletic competitions.

And where is the boundary of the universe? What is it? What does it mean to be outside of time and space? Is there really such a thing?

MEETING REPORT: : Mike Wong's seminar on photographing artwork

April's WCA Peninsula meeting took place on Tuesday the 21st, and included an exceptionally helpful and informative presentation by Coastal Arts League member Mike Wong, who also co-owns Spring Mountain Gallery in Half Moon Bay. Mike is a professional photographer with decades of experience photographing everything from weddings to artwork. In his presentation he demonstrated how to adjust camera settings to get the best possible photographs when photographing artwork for the purpose of submission to shows, placement on websites and any other digital media use.

In addition to specific camera settings, Mike emphasized the importance of other components of set-up. These included the use of a tripod and easel, the use of the self-timer feature, taping down the edges of paper against a white background, and many other tips. Lighting, aperture and speed settings were all discussed and WCA members came away with a treasure trove of information and some great new ideas on how to improve the photographic presentation of their artwork for competitions and websites.

Mike's handout is reproduced below.

WCA Peninsula Meeting Notes - featuring PAT KEEFE

Pat Keefe gave a dynamic artist presentation at the WCA Peninsula March meeting. She began her artistic endeavors in painting and bronze casting.  Initially, Pat attended college to study nursing but later advanced to art therapy.

A highlight of Pat’s presentation was her story about a door and it’s frame that she towed around in her Jeep Wagoner to make photographs at many varied locations around the Bay.  They included the DeYoung Museum and the Pacific Coast beaches.  The door project became an integral part of her college art studies and a sculptural exhibit.  This portfolio was an inspiration to those in attendance.

One of Pat’s other art projects were life-size paper dolls that she constructed from objects that tell her story. Luckily for our members, besides having wonderful pictures of the full size dolls, she had a set of the original small size paper dolls to pass around for each person to handle and to admire the feminine perspective. (See inset picture.)

As a fellow artist, I came away with a message from Pat’s presentation.   Anything is possible.  We want to let our artistic journeys flow from within ourselves.

The March meeting was held in The Peninsula Museum of Art Library, Burlingame, and a potluck lunch provided by members followed.

Peninsula Chapter meetings rotate between the Burlingame location and Coastal Art League located in Half Moon Bay. Times and dates listed below.

April-June-September-November- Coastal Art League, 6:30 dessert & tea, meeting begins at 7:00.
May-August-October-December- Peninsula Museum of Art, meeting begins at 12:00, followed by potluck lunch.

No meeting is scheduled for July 2015.

YVONNE NEWHOUSE – Yosemite Renaissance, Yosemite Museum Gallery, Yosemite, CA

Yosemite Museum Gallery,  February 28 – May 10, 2015
Headwaters Eastside
Kings Art Center, Hanford,  June – July, 2015
Carnegie Arts Center, Turlock, August – September, 2015

Yosemite Renaissance is an annual juried competition/exhibition intended to encourage diverse artistic interpretations of Yosemite. Its goals are to bring together the works of serious contemporary artists that do not simply duplicate traditional representations; to establish a continuum with past generations of Yosemite artists; and to help re-establish visual art as a major interpretive medium of the landscape and a stimulus to the protection of the environment. Historically, the arts have played a very important role in the establishment of our State and National Parks. It is our hope that they can be just as important in future efforts to preserve and protect that heritage. More information at   info@yosemiterenaissance.org.
