Cristina Velazquez Exhibits Work in IDENTITY Show

In a world dominated by pop culture, society and the media – how is identity defined?

  

In collaboration with gallery nine5, Karen Gutfreund, Exhibition Director of the Women’s Caucus for Art, is pleased to announce an international exhibition of 25 works from 21 female artists.

 

Identity seeks to expose the extremism of a consumer culture dominated by Western notions of beauty and the pursuit of idealized feminine perfection by exploring themes of power, representation and objectification. Female artists, in particular, face the challenge of identifying themselves amidst a society determined to do it for them. The artists featured in Identity attempt to manipulate the boundaries of authority and dominance and explore deeper themes of control. The viewer is challenged to confront his or her own gaze on the body and reflect on the psychological aspects of the female persona. Drawing from a feminist perspective, the selected works aim to define gender and identity through the artist’s terms, whether through accepting or rejecting society's view, and voicing their individual definitions of the powerful feminine.

Bonnie J. Marian Yap Selected as Featured Artist by Coastal Arts League

Marian Yap, a member of the Coastal Art League Gallery, has been selected as their Featured Artist.  Marian exhibits her paintings at the gallery and you will find a selection of her work from the ongoing Haiku Threads series as well as several monoprints and other mixed media work.  The gallery is located at 300 Main Street in Half Moon Bay and is open Thursday - Monday, noon to 5PM.  Please visit Marian's website www.marianyap.com  

Ruth Waters Honored by 13th Senate District

advocate for the fine arts in San Mateo County.
Well deserved recognition and honor!

The Daily Journal/Angela Swatz, 4/26/14. "Museum head named woman of the year." 

"A “deep commitment to art” in the local community is the reason Ruth Waters, founder and executive director of the Peninsula Museum of Art in Burlingame, is what landed her as the woman of year for the 13th Senate District.

State Sen. Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, presented the award to Waters. Hill named Waters Woman of the Year because he said she has been such a force in the community, tirelessly advocating on behalf of art and artists. “She is dedicated to making art accessible to everyone,” Hill said in a statement. “Ruth Waters has demonstrated unparalleled leadership by serving as a guiding light to the Peninsula Museum of Art, the 1870 Art Center in Belmont and the Peninsula Chapter of the Women’s Caucus for Art.”

About a year ago, her museum in Burlingame opened after about $800,000 worth of renovations were done. This only was able to happen after a man named Charles Homer donated $1 million to launch a building fund. The museum now hosts 28 artists that include artists from China, Germany, Iran, England and the Netherlands."   Read more.

This district keeps the San Mateo coastline from Pacifica to the Ano Nuevo State Reserve and peninsula cities from South San Francisco to Sunnyvale together. Deanna Taubman and Space Tourists

The juried student show at Skyline College opened last week on the 14th and runs through May 9th. There is a reception on Wedesday April 30th from 12 - 2 pm. Deanna Taubman, a member of WCA and a student at Skyline, had two pieces accepted into the show.  One of those pieces won a merit award in the printmaking category. The piece that won is a diptych called Space Tourists - a humorous piece that almost wasn’t submitted because Deanna thought it wasn’t serious enough to put in a show. Ellen Lee Exhibits Photographs at Peninsula Art Institute

The Peninsula Art Institute presents a duo exhibit, Natural Visions, featuring the work  of photographers Kay Podolsky and Ellen Lee.  This exhibit, to be held in the Peninsula Art Institute Gallery, 1777 California Drive, Burlingame, CA, runs from May 15 through June 22. There will be a reception open to the public on Sunday, May 18 from 1-4pm

Photography is continuously evolving with new and diverse techniques and treatments.  This exhibition explores how different photographic images can offer new perspectives
on photographic art – two artists revealing the parallels between their distinctive visions.

Ellen says, “Working abstractly could impact an image’s meaning.  Looking for beauty in the ordinary and spotlighting fragmentation in most of my work, the curious are compelled to contemplate the reason for their visual impression”.

Kay says, “Augmenting reality to entice the viewer to “feel” the 3-dimensional image requires a knowledge of perspective and the use of technology to produce my work.  The images have a tactile quality a 2-dimensional photo can only approximate.  Their construction can go beyond reality as when a cat’s paw reaches out of the mat and dares the viewer to pet it; or a tulip lowers its blossom to show the interior of its cup”.

Grand opening day for PAI was March 16, 2013. PAI is home to more than 25 resident visual artists and is located on the San Francisco Peninsula.  Its mission is to: Provide a supportive working environment for creative professionals in the visual arts and a cultural resource for the community.
