MENLO PARK, Calif. -- The Portola Art Gallery presents “Along the Nakasendo” — an exhibition of watercolor paintings by Yvonne Newhouse of San Mateo. The exhibit highlights scenes from her hiking and sketching trip to Japan last October. Although the paintings were completed in the studio, the essence of the trip was retained — moving slowly on foot, observing daily life and small gardens.

The Nakasendo is an ancient route the samurai and other people used to travel between Tokyo and Kyoto. While much of the original 300+-mile trail no longer exists in its historic form, some of the 69 “post towns” and sections of road have been beautifully preserved or restored for travelers on foot.
