Sketchy History of One Image from the Gulf Coast

A Sketchy History of One Image from the Gulf Coast

One image from all the coverage of the BP disaster in the Gulf haunted me for weeks. It was a great Pelican arising up from the ooze, crippled and dripping black from the oil. I first worked the idea out on my last two sheets of Indian Mill handmade watercolor paper. I used Derwent sketching dark wash pencils. Prior, I had been experimenting with, new to me, watercolor canvas. Deciding it was not for me, at least with this image, which by now had become rather important, a bit of an obsession. I had some regular gesso-ed oil linen canvas. In experimented with my watercolors on the canvas I decided the linen was much more successful than the watercolor canvas for my painting methods. Thus a small 8 by 10 watercolor on linen canvas, "Collateral Damage, 2010" came to be. The sketches and final watercolor piece are shown here.

Peninsula Women’s Caucus for Art - Art Exhibition “Golden State of Mind”

Showcasing the work of California Women Artists. An Exhibition that is 100% Women!

SAN FRANCISCO, California, September 1, 2010 – The Peninsula Chapter of the Women’s Caucus for Art present a member exhibition titled “Golden State of Mind”, curated by WCA, displaying the work of California women artists. The exhibition will be held from October 18, 2010 through January 28, 2011 at the Milton Marks Conference Center Galleries, San Francisco. The public reception and opportunity to meet the artists will be held in the Galleries on Thursday, October 21 from 4-5:30 pm. This event is free and open to the public.

“Golden State of Mind” includes artwork by 19 emerging and professional women artists. The 38 works on display cover a broad range of media, including painting, mixed media, textiles and photography. Organized around the theme of a “Golden State of Mind”, the show explores the artist’s interpretation of living within California, both the glamorous and the seedy; the idealized golden land and the realistic, gritty view from the street level. The artists also capture the sense of innovation in this area and local personalities. ”Regardless of the artist’s media, their individual work speaks to the uniqueness and strength of their message on “Golden State of Mind” says Tanya Lin Jaffe, exhibition coordinator.
